What Is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a cannabinoid found in cannabis, similar to CBD and THC. However its actions on the Endocannabinoid system (ECS), and our body as a whole, are a little different. It is important to study these other cannabinoids, because their actions may help us discover further therapeutic benefit from cannabis, both hemp and marijuana.
What Is Cannabigerol (CBG)?
CBG is like CBD, as it is non-psychoactive, whereas THC is the compound in cannabis that gets you high. CBG is generally only found in small quantities, around 1% of the plant. It has not been studied as extensively as more active compounds, and it is considered a “lesser” cannabinoid. Plants that have been studied with higher CBG content have been found in varieties of hemp used for textiles [1]. However what makes this cannabinoid stand out, is the fact that it is the precursor to both THC and CBD.
Enzymes contained within the cannabis plant break down CBG and begin the conversion into either THC or CBD. When these acids come in contact with sunlight (or UV lights) and heat, they convert into either CBD or THC. Due to CBG converting into only one or the other, when a plant is higher in THC, it is lower in CBD, and when it is higher in CBD, it is lower in THC. The amount of CBG is limited.
How It Helps Your Body Thrive…
CBG is being studied for potential therapeutic benefit. For this reason, some genetists are focusing on cultivars that are higher in CBG, to better concentrate this powerful healing cannabinoid.
Some of the benefits of CBG are:
- Neuroprotective, and prevents nerve cell degeneration [2].
- Effective antibacterial agent, even against staph bacteria [3].
- It acts on CB1 and CB2 in the eyes, and could prove effective for treating glaucoma, through vasodilation [4].
- Can block receptors linked to cancer cell proliferation. And could even prevent and treat colon cancer [5].
- Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) [6].
To Summarize…
Cannabigerol is being observed for its positive impact on a wide variety of health concerns. It’s neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, and overall life enhancing qualities make it a prime candidate for further study and cultivation. With its non-psychoactive qualities, it could compliment zero THC CBD products for those who wish to avoid THC.
